September Travel Guide – Where to Go & Tips

Tourism Rate:

1.  Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi is held in Bangladesh for ten days in August or September every year to celebrate the birthday of Lord Ganesha, a Hindu god of wisdom and success. It is celebrated on September 7th, 2024 and August 27th, 2025.

Before the festival, the communities will worship a huge idol of Ganesha in public and people will install one in their homes and shops or exquisitely decorated outdoor marquees. On the first day, prayers chant Vedic hymns in front of the huge idol, decorate it with red or yellow flowers and anoint it with red sandalwood paste.

During these ten days, you can not only see many different Ganesha displays but also eat a variety of local desserts such as modaks (a dessert containing coconut), barfis (a dessert made of milk), and ladoo (a dessert made of kokum and sultanas).

On the last day, people will parade, sing, and dance. Finally, they will immerse the idol in water as they believe this will allow the god to start a new journey until the next year's festival.

If you want to experience Ganesh Chaturthi, Dhaka can be a good destination as it receives less precipitation in August than other parts of the country. Being the capital of Bangladesh, it has a long history so that you can experience the most traditional customs of the festival here.

2. Chatir Char Swamp

It is easy to get to Chatir Char Swamp from Nikli Haor so that you can arrange them on the same day. Chatir Char Swamp has an intricate mix of waterways and rivers and is scattered with many lakes. Looking at it from a distance, Chatir Char Swamp is like a green island surrounded by water. The vegetation on the island is flourishing after the heavy rains in the monsoon season, providing a habitat for a wide variety of animals. Here, not only you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and get in touch with nature, but you can also interact with the local people, watch them fishing, and get a more profound experience of the local life.

3. Dohar

After having fun in the festival, you can head to Dohar, a perfect place for a day trip close to Dhaka, which is located along the Padma River. In the monsoon season, the water of the Padma rises higher after heavy rains. Hence, the river appears to be vaster. You can head to Barrah Ghat, also known as Mini Patenga beach, for rafting. Later in the afternoon, watching the sunset of the Padma River from Barrah Ghat can make your trip more memorable. Besides, fresh Hilsa fish is abundant here, and the fried Hilsa is worth trying. You can also head to Moinot Ghat, which is similar to Barrah Ghat, except it is a little further away from Dhaka.

At Dohar, apart from the beautiful view of the Padma River, you can also enjoy the architectural marvels. For example, the Khan Mohammad Mridha Mosque, the landmark of Dohar, is worth visiting. The distinctive designs and carvings inside the mosque record the glorious history of the Mughal, Muslim dynasty from the early 16th to the mid-18th century.

4. Nikli Haor

Nikli Haor is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bangladesh. It is a wetland, where the vast expanse of water is dotted by numerous small islands with vegetation floating on the surface. The superior ecological environment provides a habitat for various birds, fishes, and other aquatic animals. During the rainy season, the whole area is brimming with water, which is so vast that you can't see the edge. You can go canoeing on the Haor to see the floating forests of Chhatirchor village and also visit the floating market where people sell various snacks in their boats. During the monsoon season, the color of Nikli Hao‘s sky like an oil painting. At dusk, the sunset here is no less beautiful than that at the beach. You can camp by the edge of the Hoar at night, and occasionally, you can hear the songs of fishermen from a distance, which adds to the serenity of the surroundings.
