We were picked up at Xi’an train station by our wonderful guide, Rita, and the ever-serene Mr Dong behind the wheel. We’d just arrived on the overnight train from Beijing which was an experience in itself. (Getting the bullet train next time). So our first stop was the most sacred of all early-morning rituals at the suggestion of Rita, McDonald’s for a quick breakfast.
We then headed straight into day one of our 2 day tour with a visit to Han Yang Ling (the Yangling Mausoleum of the Han Dynasty). This included an underground on-site pit and the Exhibition Halls of unearthed funeral objects. We arrived quite early and had the place entirely to ourselves, it honestly felt like a private tour.
Next, we drove to visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and then the nearby Great Tang All Day Mall. This place is an absolute must-do at night the lights are stunning! Think Las Vegas, but swap the casinos for food stalls and restaurants.
Day Two was the real reason we’d come to Xi’an and was always going to be a highlight of this month long tour of China. We were driven about an hour from our hotel right in the heart of the Muslim Quarter to visit the Terracotta Army Museum. This is where Rita truly shone. She knows so much about Chinese history and somehow makes it all fascinating, answering every one of our questions (including the wonderfully random ones from our nine-year-old son!). We even had the chance to make our own miniature clay warrior, which was brilliant fun.
On our way back to downtown Xi’an, we stopped off at the City Wall, where it felt like half the city was dressed up for photo shoots. You could tell straight away these were destined for TikTok, RedNote, Instagram and who knows where else, no embarrassment factor here!
Through it all, Rita’s energy and humour kept us smiling, while Mr Dong’s calm and steady driving made everything feel effortless. Together, they’re the perfect team: one part lively storytelling, one part peaceful confidence.
This is where we thought the day would end but Rita gently coerced us in to going to a show, The legend of Silk Road (The Legend of the Camel Bell) google it....Rita grabbed the tickets and walked us through the crowds to what I think were up there for the best seats in the house. (3,000 seats) this show was amazing. Camels, Dogs, Wolves, waterfalls, a revolving audience seating area and so so so much more. I have never seen a show on this scale.
Highly recommended, you’ll laugh, learn, and leave with memories (and probably a clay warrior) you’ll never forget!

Rita also timed our visit to the Han Yang Ling Mausoleum perfectly — there were hardly any people, and we got to enjoy the site almost entirely to ourselves. She was so caring, walking us all the way to our hotel room through the busy Muslim Quarter, and even after saying goodbye, she offered to help with anything we might need later on.
Mr. Dong was just as wonderful — a brilliant, careful driver. After a few rides with Didi drivers, we really noticed how safe and smooth the drive was with him.
They even gave Alfie a goodbye present, which was such a kind surprise. Honestly, we couldn’t recommend Rita and Mr. Dong more — they made our time unforgettable. Absolutely amazing guide and driver!

She took us to the Giant Wide Goose Pagoda; the Terracota Warriors and Horses Museum; the Great Tang All Day Mall, with lights on; the City Wall Park and the City Wall; the Great Moske and the nearby Muslim Bazaar.

There were some surprises including the chair lift to the Great Wall and the Kung Fu Show. A nice "surprise" in Xián was the Tang dynasty music and dance show after a dumpling meal! Tai Chi and other activities in the City Wall Park were wonderful. I'll have to go back as I didn't quite master the use of chopsticks but we foreigners were usually provided with forks. Our tour coordinator, Vera Yu, assisted us with the itinerary, paperwork and documentation for arrival in Beijing, and even arranged to meet us in Xi'an.
The tour was magnificent,although strenuous for me as a senior,and covered many of the sites and cities we had heard of over the years. Hotels were beyond our expectations, and cheap, from what we experienced in North America. Hotel meals were generally excellent but we preferred to eat in local cafes; this was much cheaper and not at all difficult as most cafes had pictures of their menus posted outside, and staff were always helpful. In fact we were sometimes overwhelmed with how friendly and helpful Chinese people are.
On the Yangste cruise, where we were the only Westerners, several crew members spoke some English, and the public announcements were often repeated in English or the benefit of non-Mandarin speakers.This cruise was spectacular giving much insight into daily life in China, and culminating in the magnificent 3-Gorges Dam.
In Shanghai we went on our own with a bus tour of the city, a river cruise, and walking.I must add that I felt safer walking a night in Shanghai than I have felt in many North American cities. The Shanghai Bund (river walk), night lights on the Huangou river, and the Shanghai tower should be on everyone's bucket list.

The gratitude cost should be clearer, it is actually compulsory because it is also for the driver and the team behind the scene purchasing various tickets and making sure the tour goes smoothly.
You will need to have cash, not many places accept card. May be use Wise or master card to draw cash.
Try to travel with smaller luggages because the train rides in and out with big luggages can be hard. You can place the Small bags on the overhead compartment.
Bring roll on deodorant, one of the train ride security confiscated spray deodorants and opened alcohol.

This company is exceptional - I was nervous about using a foreign travel company, but once I started corresponding with Emily, everything quickly fell into place - despite me sending about 20 emails over the course of 4-5 months to tweak different parts of our tours. Emily was so organised, the day tours and travel arrangements all worked without a hitch. They will also send you a letter to assist with your China visas. We used We Chat in China to communicate with the Guides, who were all brilliant.

GregGreat 14 day China trip including Tibet with TCGI can highly recommend TCG. The trip was exactly as advertised and certainly met or expectations. I booked the trip online and our consultant Wendy was very helpful. All of our guides were very knowledgeable and spoke English well. The cost was reasonable and we did not encounter any unexpected fees.

DenisTravel China Guide, great experienceWe used the services of TCG twice. One time in 2004 to vist China. And again in 2018 to visit Vietnam. It is a very relliable company. The guides, drivers, hotels, airplanes and visits were excellent. You can choose their package or build your own, which we did. Great service. Especially with Wendy Lee. I will do business again with TCG in the future. Maybe to visit Myanmar.
