The temperature of Hiroshima is still low in February, making you feel a bit cold during outdoor activities.  Upper: Visiting the city in February, when the climate of Hiroshima is still relatively cold, you need to wear clothes such as shirts or thin sweaters inside and downcoats, padded jackets, or padded overcoats outside; or thicker sweaters or wool sweaters inside and 3-in-1 jackets or wool overcoats outside.


 Bottoms: Since the temperature is low, you need thick sweatpants or jeans plus thermal pants.

 Shoes: Thick casual shoes, sneakers, and various boots are suitable to keep you warm in February. If it snows, you may need nonslip ones, which are safer.

 Accessories: Since the temperature is low, to keep warm, you may need hats, scarves and gloves. To keep moist, you may also need some moisturizing skincare products and bring a portable water bottle so that you can drink water frequently.


Activities You Should Not Miss in Hiroshima in February

February’s gentle sunshine and tranquil atmosphere enhance the charm of must-see attractions like Miyajima Island, the Atomic Bomb Dome, and Hiroshima Castle. Notably, some of these sites host special events this month, offering additional experiences for your visit.

1. Oyster Festival

February marks the peak season for Hiroshima oysters, which account for 60% of Japan’s total production. Visiting Hiroshima during this time allows you to participate in two major oyster festivals.

(1) Miyajima Oyster Festival: Typically held on the second weekend of February in front of the Miyajima Pier  In 2027, the specific dates are February 13 and 14. During the festival, you can enjoy fresh oysters prepared in various ways, such as grilled or steamed, at quite low prices. Additionally, you can experience traditional performances like taiko drumming.
(2) Hiroshima Castle Oyster Festival: This festival is generally held on the last weekend of February, which is February 27-28 in 2027, at Hiroshima Castle. Approximately 70 stalls will be set up, selling not only oysters but also other local specialties like citrus fruits. Performances and parades will also be featured during the festival.

2. Plum Blossom Viewing Tea Ceremony

From mid-February, plum blossoms gradually bloom across Hiroshima. Shukkeien Garden, Yagi Bairin Park, and Hiroshima Botanical Garden are all excellent viewing spots.

Among these, Shukkeien Garden is the most recommended one. When admiring this Japanese garden, you can also see over 100 plum trees of nearly 20 varieties blooming with numerous red and white flowers. Furthermore, every mid-February, the garden hosts a plum blossom viewing tea ceremony, allowing visitors to enjoy tea while admiring the blossoms either in the indoor tea house or beneath the plum grove outdoors.

Others You Should Know when Visiting Hiroshima in February

1. The Miyajima Ropeway will be out of service for maintenance throughout February. If you plan to go to Mt. Misen for views of the Seto Inland Sea islands, you will need to hike the entire route.

2. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum closes temporarily for approximately three days in mid-February each year to change parts of the exhibits. Please check for updates. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park remains open during this period.
