The climate of Hiroshima in May is characterized by comfortable temperature and humidity. On most days, the highest temperature is above 20°C (68°F), and the temperature difference is relatively small between the daytime and the night. As for the rainfall, May is the last month before the rainy season of Hiroshima and has a growing rainfall. Though the rainfall begins to grow, it is still not large with no more than 10 rainy days on average. 

Taking the warm temperature and relatively moderate rainfall into consideration, May is one of the best months to travel to Hiroshima. As a reminder, from May 1-6, there may be crowds, because it is the Golden Week in Japan, when many locals enjoy their holiday traveling.

 Tops: The temperature in May is warm and comfortable, and light spring clothes are enough. For example, you can wear short-sleeve T-shirts, or blouses inside, and thin knitwear or long-sleeve T-shirts outside. Besides, thin hoodies are also recommended.


 Bottoms: You may need jeans, sweatpants and other light pants in May.


 Shoes: Sneakers, casual shoes, canvas shoes, and walking shoes are the best choices for long-time walking.


 Others: Rainfall in May begins to increase, so you need an umbrella or other rain gear. Besides, it is recommended to bring sunscreen, sun hats and other sunscreen products to protect the skin from direct sunlight on sunny days.

1. Hiroshima Flower Festival

The Hiroshima Flower Festival is an important annual festival in Hiroshima, which has been held since 1977. During the festival, you can see activities including parades of dressed-up citizens, and displays of various floral decoration works. There will be more than 10 theatrical performance stages along Peace Boulevard, providing performances like orchestras, dances and songs, and other cultural and artistic programs. Besides, you will also see food stalls selling tasty local food. In general, the festival is held from May 3-5. If you are interested, go and visit Hiroshima on these three days in May, 2025. 


2. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park should not be missed in May, when it is full of greenery, creating a lively scene together with the two rivers flowing by. Besides, the temperature is suitable for walking around. In the park, you can see the Peace Memorial Museum, which displays items left behind by the atomic bomb victims and related materials. There are also buildings such as the Peace Monument, Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, and Peace Bell, all of which express hope for peace. 

Near the park, the famous attraction Atomic Bomb Dome stands. During the atomic bombing, almost all the buildings in the center of Hiroshima were razed, but this building survived. After the reconstruction of Hiroshima, the building has been preserved as a monument.

3. Hijiyama Park

In May, the weather of Hiroshima is warm and perfect for walking outdoors and enjoying the spring scenery. Hijiyama Park is a free open park, and there are beautiful sceneries, shady trees and fresh air, so a good place to go. At the top of the mountain, you can enjoy panoramic views of Hiroshima and the Seto Inland Sea, see the sunset at dusk, and enjoy the view of Hiroshima under the neon lights at night. 

In addition, the Tamon-in Temple, one of a few old buildings that survived the atomic bombing, is located here. The roof of the temple’s Bell Tower still retains its appearance after the atomic bombing. Apart from that, you can also visit the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art here, which has a large collection of more than 1,400 items.
