In June, Hiroshima enters summer and the temperature gradually climbs, but it’s not too hot yet. Specifically, in the first a few days, the minimum temperature may be below 20°C (68°F), but the overall temperature is on an upward trend, so in the second half of the month, the temperature is averagely above 20°C (68°F). The daylight hours are long, providing you with more visiting time. In addition, in this month, especially the second half, the rainy season comes and the rainfall increases, bringing an average of 12 rainy days and resulting in the humid climate.

Hiroshima June Clothes

 Clothes: In warm June, you can wear T-shirts, short-shirts, skirts, shorts, light pants and dresses, and you are also advised to bring a long-sleeve T-shirt or a thin overcoat to cope with the cool night and some cool rainy days. Since the weather is humid and it takes a long time for washed clothes to dry, it’s recommended to bring more clothes for change.


 Shoes: Sandals and water shoes are recommended, which are convenient and quick to get dry on rainy days. Besides, sneakers, casual shoes, canvas shoes, and walking shoes are also needed when you plan to walk around.

1. Miyajima Island

Whenever travel to Hiroshima, you should not miss the famous Miyajima Island. If it rains when you are there in June, you can choose to stay on the island for a night to enjoy the rain scenery quietly and have a leisure tour the next day. Here are some famous attractions on the island:

(1) Itsukushima Shrine is one of the a few shrines in Japan with wooden structures located by the sea. The Otorii gate is the symbol of the shrine, standing at the entrance of the shrine. At high tide, the gate seems to float on the sea, which is spectacular. 

(2) Mount Misen, the highest peak on Miyajima, is covered by primeval forest. On a clear day, you can choose to hike here. Once you reach the top of the mountain, you can have a bird’s eye view of the Seto Inland Sea.

(3) Others: Apart from the Itsukushima Shrine, there are some other shrines and temples on Miyajima, which are also worth visiting, Daishoin Temple, Daiganji Temple, Senjokaku, etc. Besides, Miyajima Public Aquarium is a good indoor place to go, where you can visit when it rains.

2. Atomic Bomb Sites

On sunny days, be sure to visit A-bomb sites, which are must-see attractions in Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, the atomic bomb exploded over Hiroshima, and only the Atomic Bomb Dome 160 meters (525 feet) away from the explosion point did not collapse, becoming the witness of the first atomic bombing in human history. In 1996, UNESCO added it to the World Heritage Sites. In order to avoid war and pray for peace, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park was built near the Dome. If you want to learn about the causes and consequences of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, you can visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum; and if you want to remember the victims and pray for peace, you can visit the Peace Monument, Cenotaph for the A-Bomb Victims, etc.

3. Three Art Museums in Hiroshima

If it happens to rain, it’s recommended to go to some indoor attractions in Hiroshima, for example, you can pay a visit to the art museums. Hiroshima Museum of Art, showing impressionists’ works mainly; Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art, showing Hiroshima-related works, Japanese and Asian crafts; and Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, showing works about the past and modern Hiroshima are recommended. These three museums have a variety of exhibitions, which are suitable for a leisurely strolling.

Tip: All the three museums are closed on Mondays, so please arrange your visit accordingly.

4. Hondori Street

Unlike shopping malls, the products sold in Hondori Street are mainly daily necessities. Located in the center of Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Hondori Street is lined with nearly 200 shops, including snack shops, clothing stores, toy stores, home goods stores, as well as shops selling local products of Hiroshima. So, in addition to shopping, you can have a glimpse into locals’ life here. Moreover, there is a roof on the top of the street, making it suitable to visit during the rainy season like June.
