 Season: Summer
 In short:  hot and sunny

August, the last month of summer, is the hottest month in Hiroshima, and the highest temperature can be over 35°C (95°F). Rainfall in August is relatively small, which usually doesn’t influence your trip. What should be noted is that the rainy days are cooler than usual, so you need to adjust your clothing accordingly. Besides, since Hiroshima is preparing to step into autumn at that time, the daytime begins to shorten, but because of the decrease in rain, the sunshine hour is relatively long. Please remember to check the weather forecast before setting off, because there is a risk of typhoons.

Overall, less rainfall and more sunny days in August are beneficial to travel, while the high temperature will influence your travel experience to some extent.

Clothing and Accessories for Hiroshima Trip in August

Hiroshima August Clothes

Clothes: In the hottest month, light and breathable clothes are suitable. You can wear tank tops, T-shirts or short shirts plus skirts, shorts, etc. Besides, you are advised to bring light-colored clothing, because the dark-colored ones make you feel hotter in the sunshine. You could also bring a thin shirt for possible rainy days with cool weather.

Shoes: Sandals and flip flops can keep you cool in the hot summer, while sneakers can decrease your discomfort of long walking, so you are advised to bring both of them.

Others: Sun protective gear is necessary in August, like sunglasses, sunhats, and parasols. Among them, parasols are indispensable, because they can also protect you from rain. Moreover, remember to bring a bottle of water when you go out to help you stay hydrated.

Where to Go in Hiroshima in August

 Tourism Rate:

1. Miyajima Island

Miyajima Island, which has a lower temperature, is a good destination to escape the summer heat in Hiroshima downtown, while enjoying the gentle sea breeze, blue sea and sky and beautiful nature, and visiting human landscapes.

The most famous human attractions are Itsukushima Shrine, including various small shrines, stages and music rooms around connected by 108 long corridors; and the 16-meter-high (52-foot-high) Otorii gate floating on the sea. Stepping forward, there are Tahoto Pagoda, Awaahima Shime, Daishoin Temple, etc., which are also worth visiting, and you may meet lovely deer on your way. Besides, if you like nature, you can go to Mount Misen. Both hiking paths and ropeway are provided for visitors here. Standing on the top of the mountain, you will see the beautiful view of the Seto Inland Sea.

2. Atomic Bomb Dome and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park

August 6, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary atomic bombing, and commemorative activities will be held in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park to mourn for the dead and pray for peace.

Peace Memorial Park was built after the atomic bombing to exhort people to cherish peace. Spots inside include the Peace Memorial Museum, Children’s Peace Monument, and Peace Bell. Across the river from the park, stands the Atomic Bomb Dome, a building miraculously survived from the bomb.

3. Sandankyo Gorge

If you’re looking for a cool place with shade, water and clear air in summer, Sandankyo is a great choice. Sandankyo is a 16-kilometer-long (9.9-mile-long) gorge surrounded by primeval forest and is one of Japan’s five most famous gorges. You can enjoy major landscapes including Kurobuchi, a crevasse; Sarutobi, a tall cliff; Sandandaki, three-step falls; Nidandaki, two-step falls; and Mitsutaki, the largest fall of Sandankyo. Among them, Sandandaki, which has a drop of 30 meters (98 feet) and is divided into three sections and roars down, is the most spectacular spot here. In the silent gorge, you can take a walk along the clear stream in the forest, or take a ferry to sail between the rushing Nidandaki and the Sarutobi Gorge Gate.

Tips:

1. The Fireworks Festival is still celebrated in some places in Hiroshima, so you can search for related information and go to appreciate the beautiful firework shows.
2. August 11 is the Mountain Day, one of the public holidays of Japan. August 15 is the O-Ben Festival, when the Japanese go back to their hometowns and pray for their ancestors. Though it is not a public holiday, Japanese companies usually give employees a holiday from August 13 to 15. Therefore, from August 11 to 16, the local traffic is usually crowded and busy.
