Although February in Tokyo is cold, it’s a good time to appreciate the plum blossoms. Here are three recommended places to take part in the plum blossom festival and appreciate the flowers:


1. The Setagaya Plum Blossom Festival in Hanegi Park is the hottest place to appreciate the plum blossoms within the main city area of Tokyo. Visitors can appreciate more than 650 plum blossom trees and more than 60 varieties in the same time. In 2025, it will be celebrated between mid-February and early March.

2. Yushima Tenmangu Shrine has been a famous spot to appreciate the plum blossoms since the Edo period (1603-1868AD). Therefore, the Bunkyo-ku Plum Blossom Festival held here is absolutely lively. Visitors can not only appreciate about 300 plum blossoms of 20 different varieties here, but also enjoy activities like artistic performances and concerts. It is held from the first week in February to the first week of March in 2025, or from 3rd February to 3rd March.

3. The Fuchu Kyodo no Mori Plum Festival in Kyodonomori Park is also one of the most popular spots to see the plum blossoms. There are 60 species and 1,100 plum trees in the park and there are various entertainment facilities in the park, too.

Tip: Please check the blossom time in advance when you are about to admire plum blossoms. 


Setsubun Festival

Setsubun Festival is usually on February 3rd every year and it is the most famous activity happening in February in Tokyo. On that day, people throw beans at the person who plays ghost to drive away evil spirits and pray for good luck. Another custom is to eat a kind of special sushi rolls, called eho-maki. The eho-maki is longer than the usual sushi rolls and it has the good meaning of longevity. If you want to enjoy the festive atmosphere, welcome the spring or pray for the future, go to the Daikunikojin Shrine, Sensoji Temple or Zojoji Temple.

Hatsuuma Festival - Mabashi Inari-jinja Shrine

Another activity happening in February is Hatsuuma Festival. During the festival, all the Inari Shrines in Japan hold ceremonies to pray for good harvests and business prosperity for this year. In Mabashi Inari-jinja Shrine, rice cakes in white and red colors are pounded for the deity and visitors have the chance to taste rice cakes and sweet rice wine made by professionals. In 2025, this festival would be held on 6th February.

Hot Spring Bath - Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA & Thermae Yu 

February is a good time to enjoy the hot spring bath, called onsen in Japanese. Visitors can choose to go for a bath in the Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA or the Thermae Yu. The water of most natural hot spring is very turbid but in Tokyo Somei Onsen SAKURA, the water is clean and clear. Bathing in the pools, visitors can get relaxed both physically and mentally. The Thermae Yu is located in the center of Shinjuku which is near to the Kabukicho, an entertainment district. If you happen to be around Kabukicho at night, don’t forget to take a relaxing bath in the Thermae Yu.

Tip: Swimming suits may not be allowed in onsens pools, in which case you need to be naked bathing. Bring your bathrobe or rent one to wear before entering the pools. People with tattoos are probably prohibited in onsens; please confirm with the onsen operator before making an order.
