Nagoya Castle Summer Festival

Nagoya Castle, built in 1612, is known as one of the Three Great Castles in Japan. In the Main Keep, you can see numerous historical materials and models. The two golden shachi ornaments on its roof are the symbols of Nagoya Castle. The exquisite Honmaru Palace in the castle is also worth visiting.

Nagoya Castle Summer Festival celebrated from early August to mid-August is a popular festival in Nagoya. At that time, the Southwest Corner Watchtower preserved from the Edo period (1603-1868) is open for limited hours. It is highly advised to have a visit. Besides, various activities such as catching goldfish and shooting games are held. In the evening, the whole castle is lit up, presenting a fascinating scene that can be only seen at the festival. Everyone dances Bon Odori around the stage decorated with Nagoya lanterns, creating a unique festive atmosphere.

Osu Summer Festival 

Osu Kannon Temple is a popular destination in Nagoya. It worships a wooden statue of Kannon surviving the fire in the 1920s. The temple is located at the Osu Shopping District, where various restaurants and shops are lined up. With a history of over 400 years, it is known as one of the most vibrant shopping streets in Japan. Various activities are held in the Osu area throughout the year. If you happen to be here in August 2025, do not miss the Osu Summer Festival on the first weekend. You can watch wonderful Taiko performances in the temple and join the samba dance parade on the street outside. The festival ends with a handheld fireworks display in the temple in the evening. With the majestic sound of Taiko, you can light fireworks and see them spewing out columns of fire.

World Cosplay Summit

In addition to traditional shops, Osu Shopping District boasts many facilities of “otaku culture”. As the birthplace of Cosplay, it serves as the venue for the Cosplay World Summit held from every late July to early August, an international event jointly participated by Cosplay enthusiasts worldwide. During the summit, a cosplay parade is held in the Osu Shopping District. Cosplay contestants and fans dress up as their favorite anime and game characters to march on the street starting from the Osu Kannon Temple, making Nagoya the world of anime. 

Nippon Domannaka Festival

Every year at the end of August, nearly 20,000 dancers of about 200 teams from all over Japan gather in Nagoya to celebrate the Nippon Domannaka Festival. It is the largest dance festival in central Japan and a major summer event in Nagoya. During the 4-day celebrations, performers wearing bright costumes do traditional Japanese dances in original music. The main stage is in Hisaya-odori Park. You can not only watch the performance for free but also join the performers to dance together.
