Mild temperature

The temperature shows a downward trend for the whole month. At the beginning, the daytime temperature remains a mild 25 – 28 degrees Celsius (77 – 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit). When the sun shines at noon, it is a little hot, while in the shade, it’s cool. In mountainous areas like Mount Fuji, the wind can be strong sometimes, but it feels cool rather than cold. By month end, the high value hovers around 21 - 23℃ (69.8 – 73.4℉), which is ideal for outdoor sightseeing.

Besides, a relatively big temperature difference of 8 - 10℃ (14.4 - 18℉) exists between day and night. The low temperature within a day is often 12 - 17℃ (53.6 – 62.6℉), which can be somewhat cold, particularly when the wind blows.

Moderate rainfall & Possible typhoon

About 10 days in October see some rain on average, with a total amount of 200 mm (7.9 in). It is the last month when Tokyo is affected by typhoons. They visit 1 – 2 times on average, covering about 1 – 3 days each time. Typhoons, combined with the cold air from the north, cause some rainstorms that may incur river flooding and urban waterlogging, especially in early October. When the typhoon passes, occasional light rain and intermittent moderate rain become the main types. They won’t continuously bother your trip: each rainfall ends quickly. One thing to note is that the perceived temperature drops a little after the rain.

Air humidity remains a moderate 65% in October, which feels neither dry nor humid.

Sunshine duration & Daylight length

The average sunshine duration in Tokyo in October is only 4 hours per day. Other than rainy weather, cloudy weather also shows up frequently. As a result, sunny days only account for a small part. For visitors who are fond of Mount Fuji in Tokyo, late October with more sunny days is a good option to admire from a distance. It’s worth noting that snow cover doesn’t appear in the month.

The daylight spans about 11 – 12 hours. The sun rises early, at 5:35 – 6:02, but sets early too, at about 16:47 - 17:25. To visit more attractions during your trip, you may need to manage the time spent at each one.

Is October a good time to visit Tokyo?

Yes. The first advantage lies in its favorable climate, including mild temperatures and moderate humidity. In the meantime, the autumn leaves turn beautiful on the mountains from the end of the month onward. Since the peak season for fall foliage hasn’t arrived yet, you can expect a not very crowded and relatively cheaper journey in Tokyo in October. Only at top destinations like Senso-ji Temple, Meiji Jingu Shrine, and Tokyo Disneyland do you need to queue up to enter.

Dress code for visiting Tokyo in October

What to Wear in Tokyo in October
For daytime: A single shirt or long-sleeve T-shirt with jeans is a good match for walking a long time in the sun. In the first half of the month, people who don’t like the heat can choose a T-shirt. For women, long-sleeve dresses are optional, but leggings are needed in the second half of the month.

For early morning and night: Put on a short trench coat or denim jacket to deal with the blowing wind. These jackets are also required for rainy conditions.

Shoes: Lightweight and waterproof sneakers are advised.

Necessities: Carry rain gear with you during outdoor sightseeing. Either a raincoat or an umbrella is OK.

Special recommendation: The climate of Tokyo in October is pretty suitable for experiencing the Japanese traditional clothing, the kimono. There are many kimono rental shops in Tokyo that provide rich choices. Walking on a street and taking photos in a kimono can absolutely give you an unforgettable traveling memory.

Can you see red leaves in Tokyo in October?

Yes. Although the leaves in downtown Tokyo remain green, you can go to nearby mountainous areas for sightseeing at the end of the month, for example, Mt. Mitake. It is 900 m (2,952.8 ft) high, so the temperature here is lower than in other places, which makes it the first place to see red leaves in Tokyo. Those leaves covering all over the mountain create an unmissable scene for tourists.

The leaves around Lake Okutama begin to change from green to red, yellow, or orange at the end of the month, too, offering another choice to admire fall foliage in October.

Tip: Mt. Mitake area is far away from downtown, about 70 km (43.5 mi). Make a proper plan if you want to see the red leaves there.
