Is March still cold in Tokyo?

Yes, it’s a little cold at the beginning of the month and in the morning and evening within a day, although it enters spring.

On the whole, the temperature is rising in the month. The high temperature at the beginning is 11 – 13 degrees Celsius (51.8 – 55.4 degrees Fahrenheit), and climbs to 15 - 17℃ (59 – 62.6℉) by the end, which doesn’t feel that cold; sometimes, it reaches nearly 20℃ (68℉). However, during this period, the temperature changes dramatically. When a cold wave from the north arrives, the high value drops sharply by 6 - 10℃ (10.8 - 18℉), and sometimes even back to single digits, making people feel like they are immediately back in winter.

In addition, the day-night temperature difference is also significant, remaining 7 – 11℃ (44.6 -51.8℉) often. So, even though you feel warm in the sun at noon, you cannot let your guard down for the evening.

Considering the changeable climatic conditions, be sure to check the weather forecast all the time during your trip.

Is March a good time to go to Tokyo?

Yes, it’s undoubtedly one of the best times to have a Tokyo trip, particularly for cherry blossom lovers. The temperature is moderate during the day, and occasional rainfall doesn’t disturb too much. In addition, long daylight provides ample time to appreciate the cherry blossoms blooming everywhere after mid-month.

However, blooming sakura incurs a peak tourist season, when crowds pour, and hotel and flight prices skyrocket. That’s why Tokyo is expensive in March. It is recommended to make all reservations once you set your itinerary. At the same time, prepare a bigger budget.
