In November, Hokkaido experiences intensifying weather changes. The average temperature remains around 10℃ (50℉) in most areas at the beginning of the month. In the northern and eastern regions, it drops below 0℃ (32℉), and many locals start heating in their houses. Till late November, severe cold climate sets in. 

It does not rain much in November in Hokkaido. Since mid-late the month, the first snow can be seen all over the region, indicating that winter is coming soon. In central and southern cities such as Sapporo and Hakodate, the first snow is not heavy, and snowflakes melt quickly. In mountainous areas and northern regions such as Wakkanai and Asahikawa, snow is banked up little by little due to the low temperature.

The sun sets early in November, leading to a relatively short daytime. Therefore it is advised to make full use of the daytime for sightseeing.

Hokkaido November Clothes

Clothes: Although November is the last autumn month in Hokkaido, winter clothes are needed actually according to the low average temperature, especially late in this month. Breathable sweater or hoodie is suitable for staying indoors, and padded jacket or down coat is helpful to hold off the coldness outside. For the bottom, fleece sweatpants or winter pants are advised. Wearing fleece leggings with wool skirt is also a good choice for women.
Shoes: A pair of warm sneakers are suitable for long-time outdoor activities. For chilly days in the second half of the month, waterproof and non-slip boots are necessary.
Accessories: As it is likely to snow, remember to carry an umbrella with you just in case.

Red Autumn Leaves Resorts

In autumn in Hokkaido, red autumn leaves is the must-see for many visitors. Coming here in early November 2024 when there is not many tourists for the peak viewing season is almost over, you have the chance to appreciate the scenery at a leisurely pace. The Former Hokkaido Government Office in Sapporo has over 400 trees of around 100 species, the leaves of which all turn red in autumn. Onuma Quasi National Park is another choice. Colorful leaves are reflected on Lake Onuma, creating a stunning landscape.

Sapporo

If you prefer enjoyable city sightseeing instead of exciting outdoor activities in Hokkaido in cold November, Sapporo, the largest city in this region, can be an ideal destination. In Shiroi Koibito Park, you can experience making chocolate biscuits by yourself. The former Hokkaido Government Office, a red brick building in the American New Baroque style, is also worth visiting. If you want to buy some souvenirs or eat authentic foods, go to Tanukikoji Street. Sapporo White Illumination is celebrated since late this month when you can see many parts of the city are illuminated by gorgeous lights.

Asahikawa Zoo

In November, a menagerie of special animals are vibrant in the famous Asahiyama Zoo.
