Hokkaido Weather in July

Season: summer
In short: pleasant, sunny or cloudy, intensifying temperature variation, sea fog in southeast coastal areas

Hokkaido is a popular summer resort in Japan in July thanks to its favorable temperature and a few rains.
Temperature: It is cooler than other regions of Japan, with a high temperature below 30℃ (86℉) averagely this month, but the temperature varies greatly between day and night. It always drops sharply after the sun sets. If open the window of your room, you will feel cool enough, which is one of the reasons why many Hokkaido people do not have air conditioning in their homes.
Rainfall: Not affected by the rainy season, it usually rains a little this month in Hokkaido. Sunny days make up the majority in southern areas. In northern and central regions, there are fewer clear days, while the eastern part experiences more cloudy days.
Special weather: Eastern coastal areas such as Kushiro and Nemuro can often see sea fogs when the temperature sometimes drops below 10℃ (50℉). Please pay attention to local climate conditions in advance.

What to Wear & Pack to Visit Hokkaido in July

Hokkaido July Clothes

Sightseeing in urban areas

Blouse, T-shirt, light pants, and summer dress are recommended. If you can’t bear the summer heat, shorts and skirts are also acceptable. After night falls with lower temperature, remember to put on a thin overcoat. Or you can take a sun protection jacket which can insulate yourself from the sun during the day and the coldness at night. For shoes, casual shoes are suitable for downtown tours.

Go outing in the suburbs

Because of the strong sunshine at noon and active mosquitoes, you need to try to reduce the exposed skin. Thin shirt and pants are advised. Besides, wearing sunglasses and sunhats can also help to prevent UV rays. Do not forget to bring the mosquito repellent to deal with mosquito bites. For shoes, breathable sneakers are necessary for long-time walking.

Things Not to Miss in Hokkaido in July

Tourism Rate:

Appreciate Lavender of Hokkaido

Lavender is one of the prettiest sceneries of Hokkaido, and July when they are in full bloom is the best viewing time. Furano and Biei, known as the “Provence of the East”, are two of the most famous lavender viewing destinations. In Farm Tomita in Furano, you can see varieties of lavender dyeing the mountains a romantic purple. It’s a good idea to take photos with the beautiful landscape in light-colored clothes. When visiting Shikisai-no-Oka Garden in Biei, remember to rent a bicycle and ride in the vast fields to fully admire lavenders.

Tip:
It is advised to appreciate the flowers and take photos on the surrounding paths, and entering the field without authorization is not allowed.

Explore Lake Shikotsu

Hokkaido is a popular summer resort in Japan. In pleasant July, you can enjoy doing various outdoor activities such as cycling, camping and hiking in numerous cool outdoor centers, among which Lake Shikotsu in Sapporo is one of the most famous. It boasts clear water and sees relatively less tourists this month. You can camp within the designated area, cycle through the towns, and take boat rides on the lake. Kayaking and paddle boarding are also popular activities. If you want to have a quiet time, fishing is a good choice. Walking on the Shikotsu Wild Bird Nature Path on shore, you have the chance to see various birds.

Tip:
Generally, there is no need to book a camping spot in advance (first come first served). If you schedule camping in your trip, remember to get there as early as possible to find the best location.
