At the foot of Mount Fuji, the weather in May is very warm, with the monthly average temperature ranging 9-21 degrees Celsius (48.2-69.8 degrees Fahrenheit). Daily maximum temperatures occasionally fall below 15℃ (59℉) or exceed 24℃ (75.2℉); daily minimum temperatures mainly remain under 10℃ (50℉) in the first half of the month, possibly dropping to around 5℃ (41℉) in the early days, and above 10℃ in the second half.

The climate in Mount Fuji 5th Station is still cold overall, with the lowest temperature even dropping below freezing and the highest often hover around 10℃ (50℉).

The wet weather at the foot of Mount Fuji in May is in form of rainfalls and no snowfall can be seen, with the average monthly precipitation of 187mm scattering in about 16 days. In some years, the rainy days exceeded 20 days. However, light rain is the main trend, and moderate or heavy rain may occur several times.

Is There Still Cherry Blossoms in May around Mt. Fuji?

The climate varies from year to year. If the cherry blossoms bloom late that year, you may still be able to see a few cherry blossom trees in bloom in some places around the Lake Kawaguchi and Lake Yamanaka in early May, but they are about to wither.

 Early May coincides with Japan’s Golden Week, and many tourists come to visit Mount Fuji during this holiday. In addition, the Mount Fuji Cycling Race is usually held in the first a few days of June, when tens of thousands of people may flow in since late May. Therefore, it is recommended that you avoid the two time periods, as hotels around Mount Fuji may be difficult to book.
