Hot but Not Scorching

Generally speaking, weather around the foothill of Mt. Fuji is hot in July, with average temperatures ranging from a low of 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 degrees Fahrenheit) to a high of 27℃ (80.6℉). There may be several days with the maximum temperature over 30℃ (86℉), but it scarcely exceeds 33℃ (91.4℉). Thus, there is no scorching heat. Continuous rainfall may cause the maximum temperature to drop to around 18℃ (64.4℉), but this is just a rare case. In the early mornings and evenings, temperatures are comfortably cool, staying no less than 14℃ (57.2℉) and occasionally rising above 21℃ (69.8℉).

The temperature on the mountainside is much lower than that of the foothills, with an average temperature of around 13℃ (55.4℉); the temperature on the top of the mountain is above freezing point, averaging from 3-8℃ (37.4-46.4℉), so there is no snow cover.

Rainy Season with High Precipitation & Humidity

July is known as the month with substantial rain: the average monthly precipitation is 262mm and there are approximately 21 rainy days, most of which features light rain, while several moderate rainfalls also occur; in some years, the rainstorm could occur for a few times. However, don’t be overwhelmed with the statistics, since light rain won’t cause too much trouble, and intense rain usually stops after a while, and finally rewards you with a clear sky.

In the higher elevations, the weather condition is not stable, with thundershowers often happen without warning.

The climate this month is very humid, with the average humidity as high as 81% at the foot of the mountain and 79% at the top.

Daylight Hours & Sunshine Hours

Sunset time (1st - 31st): 19: 05 - 18: 51

The daylight duration at the beginning of July is about 14.5 hours, and then gradually shortens to about 14 hours at the end of the month. Broadly speaking, the days are very long, so if you encounter a shower in the day, which is usually brief, you still have adequate time left for outdoor activities. Getting up early to watch the sunrise may be challenging, but watching the sun setting down the Mount Fuji at places such as the shores of the Lake Kawaguchi is a pleasure. Statistics show that the daily sunshine duration is about 8 hours, but the number of sunny days in the whole month is extremely rare, 4 days or so.

Visibility

Due to the common rainy weather, combined with a very humid climate and scarce sunlight throughout July, the visibility is very low on the whole. However, you still have chances to appreciate a clearer view of the Mount Fuji in the early morning or at dusk when the visibility is higher.

Is It Worth Visiting Mount Fuji in July?

It depends.

For tourists who want to see the Mount Fuji, July may not be an optimal time considering frequent rainfalls. Besides, there is already no snow cap and the visibility is so low that you can hardly enjoy a clear full view of the mountain.

However, July is a good month for hikers as the climbing season begins from the early month when you can climb to the top of Mount Fuji. In addition, July is also the right time to enjoy the beautiful natural scenery, especially during the time from early July to mid-July when there are large areas of blooming purple lavender around the Lake Kawaguchi.
