Mongolia Weather in December

Mongolia in December experiences a bitterly cold winter with extremely low temperature, scarce precipitation and shortest sunlight hours of the year. Precipitation is mainly light snow, but snow storms might occur as well. Low temperature keeps the snow solid and unmelted, thus presenting a white landscape everywhere. The harsh weather conditions make the travel to Mongolia in December such a big challenge.

Frigid with Regional Temperature Differences

Average High Temperature: -10℃ (14℉)
Average Low Temperature: -22℃ (-8℉)

In December, daytime high temperature normally ranges from -17 to -6 degrees Celsius (1-21 degrees Fahrenheit), and the nighttime low temperature mostly swings between -30 and -19℃ (-22 - -2℉). However, it is of regional difference, for example, the low temperature in Northern and Western Mongolia fluctuates between -30 and -24℃ (-22 - -11℉) while that of Southern Mongolia only between -16 and -10 ℃ (3-14℉). When cold air hits Mongolia, the temperature in Northern and Western Mongolia might plummet to -40℃ (-40℉) or even lower.

To conclude from the above data, Mongolia weather in December is freezing and frigid especially in Northern and Western Mongolia. When you stay outside, even with one inch of skin exposed to the cold air, you will feel it numb and find your eyelashes or hair ice covered in minutes. So, you had better arm yourself with thick clothes from bottom to top.

Low Snowfall but Possible Snow Storms

Although scarce, snowfall occurs in many regions of Mongolia in December. In most time, it snows lightly and the snow on the urban streets are cleaned up timely. However, it is possible that the snow gets heavy and further forms into a snow storm, thus causing most roads covered with thick snow which is not cleaned promptly, making it inconvenient for visitors to pay a visit to Mongolia.

The cracks on the lake seem like a painting of Minimal Art and the frozen bubbles under the ice sprinkle like pearls in the blue ocean. You can also see the snow-covered mountain peaks and awesome sunset clouds reflected on the frozen lake, making you feel like walking into a fantasy.

What to Wear in Mongolia in December?

You are suggested to wear as warm as you can if you plan to conduct outdoor activities.

Mongolia December Clothes
Upper body: You had better choose turtleneck underwear made of fleece for the inner layer to preserve heat. Normal sweaters and hoodies are unable to cope with the extremely low temperature outside anymore, so thin and tight down coats are suggested for the second layer since they function efficiently to keep warm and will not make you so bulky. Then, you can wear long heavy down coats or fur coats for the outer layer. It would be better if your outer coats are attached with hoods.

Lower body: Thick long johns with fleece-lined pants or down trousers are good matches. They should be wind-proof and water-proof so as to better prevent the cold air. As knees are more sensible to coldness, it is suggested to prepare woolen kneepads to keep warm.

Shoes: Shoes must be non-slip and you can choose from snow boots, fleece-lined walking boots and thick padded sneakers. Also, be sure to prepare woolen socks long enough to cover your ankles.

Others: Thick gloves, scarves and hats are indispensable since most heat loses from head and neck. Please do wear masks not only to keep warm but also to deal with the low air quality caused by coal-powered heating system. Moreover, it is necessary to prepare some warm pastes and stick them on your back, waist, underbelly or wherever susceptible to coldness. Don’t forget to pack protective glasses which can protect your eyes in the snow-covered landscape.
