Hanoi Weather in October

October marks Hanoi’s climatic transition month. Autumn vibes gradually settle in, bringing generally pleasant weather: it is no longer scorching hot; rainfall drops sharply; sunshine is plentiful; and the risk of typhoon impacts diminishes significantly. While Hanoi has stepped into its peak tourist season, it has yet not reached its busiest period. Travelers can explore all major attractions amid ideal weather conditions, and enjoy a more serene experience compared with the busiest tourist season.

Temperature

In October, Hanoi is neither cold nor scorching, but the day-night temperature difference is gradually becoming more apparent.

Daytime highs generally hover between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius (86 - 91 degrees Fahrenheit), with a faint trace of summer heat still lingering. You may break into a slight sweat when heading to the Old Quarter at midday. However, humidity drops to around 70%, near its annual low, which drastically eases the stuffy, sticky discomfort. By the end of the month, the highs may drop to just 24 - 28℃ (75 - 82℉): gentle autumn breezes blow, and you won’t feel hot even when walking along Hoan Kiem Lake in bright sunshine.

Nighttime lows settle at 22 - 25℃ (72 - 77℉), allowing you to sleep comfortably without air conditioning. Towards the end of the month, temperatures may plummet to 17 - 18℃ (63-64℉), bringing a gentle chill. Heading out for a piping-hot bowl of beef pho from a street stall at this time is utterly delightful.

Precipitation

October marks the last month with relatively high rainfall in Hanoi. However, precipitation decreases significantly in the latter half of the month, greatly reducing its impact on travel. The monthly average rainfall drops to 131 mm, with only 9 rainy days.

Most rain in this month comes in short afternoon showers; persistent all-day rain is extremely rare. Just take shelter in nearby indoor spaces during downpours, and you can resume your itinerary once the rain eases. Do note that these brief showers are often intense, triggering rapid road flooding. Avoid low-lying areas after rain to prevent slips and falls.

In addition, occasional heavy rainfall can be caused by typhoon circulations. In 2025, for example, Typhoon Matmo brought Hanoi accumulated rainfall of over 150 mm from October 5 to 9. Flooding deeper than 50 cm swept across many areas, triggering widespread traffic congestion. You are advised to avoid traveling to Hanoi during typhoon-affected periods.

Daytime and Sunshine Duration

Days grow progressively shorter across Hanoi in October. At the start of the month, daylight lasts nearly 12 hours, yet this figure falls to around 11.5 hours by the month’s end. Sunrise typically occurs at 5:46 - 5:57, while sunset at 17:22 - 18:46. Despite the shrinking daylight, sunshine remains ample, with about 5 hours of effective sunlight daily. Notably, even as the heat eases off, the UV index can hit Level 10 under direct sun. Without adequate sun protection, you risk painful sunburn.

Packing List for Visiting Hanoi in October

For sunny days: Opt for lightweight summer clothes such as short-sleeve T-shirts, shorts, thin pants and dresses. Temperatures drop in the early mornings and late evenings late in October, so keep a thin long-sleeve cardigan or sun-protective shirt handy. It will shield you from cool breezes and strong UV rays. Pair your outfit with breathable casual shoes or sneakers.

For rainy days: Choose quick-drying short-sleeve tops, and avoid long dresses to prevent hemlines from getting stained with sewage and mud. Layer with a lightweight waterproof jacket for protection against both rain and chill. Prioritize waterproof and non-slip shoes to keep your feet dry and avoid slips while walking.

Tips

1. Hanoi sees a growing day-night temperature difference in October. You’re at risk of catching a cold when heading out early in the morning or late at night. Therefore, adjust your clothing promptly based on the temperature and pack basic cold and fever-reducing medication.

2. Keep your travel plans flexible. If heavy rain strikes, suspend all outdoor activities and take shelter in your hotel or other indoor venues. You may resume your sightseeing once the weather improves.

3. While the heat is no longer oppressive, prolonged outdoor activities can still lead to dehydration. Remember to replenish electrolytes or lightly salted water in time, and limit your exposure to direct, intense sunlight.
