Vietnam Weather in December

In December, Vietnam presents a distinctive climatic contrast between regions: the north experiences a cool early winter weather, while the south maintains warm, summer-like temperatures. Fortunately, the temperatures in both regions are not extreme low or high, being generally comfortable. Moreover, this period is characterized by minimal precipitation across the whole year, with a low likelihood of rain-related disruptions for travel.

Temperature

As Siberian cold air mass moves southward, the temperature in northern Vietnam drops. For instance, in Hanoi, the daytime temperature ranges from 21 to 28 degrees Celsius (70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit), and the nighttime temperature is between 14 and 20℃ (57 to 68℉). Usually, a light jacket is enough for going out. Even if there is a cold wave, you won’t feel freezing. Just throw on a scarf casually and you can enjoy strolling along the ancient streets.

However, it should be particularly noted that Sapa, located in the high altitude area of northern Vietnam, has a much lower temperature and the chill is more pronounced. The temperature at midday here often does not exceed 22℃ (72℉), and it can drop below 10℃ (50℉) at night. If there is a strong wind, you might even shiver involuntarily.

In contrast, southern Vietnam remains in a tropical summer climate. For example, in Ho Chi Minh City, daytime temperatures typically range from 29 to 34℃ (84 to 93℉), while nighttime lows fall between 23 and 26℃ (73 to 79℉). You might feel hot when going out during the midday, but it’s never stiflingly scorching. The early mornings and evenings are cool, with gentle breezes caressing your face, creating a comfort that feels like having a natural air conditioner.

Precipitation

Average precipitation: 90 mm from 11 rainy days

In December, Vietnam experiences infrequent rainfall. Notably, there are distinct differences in precipitation patterns between the north and south.

In northern Vietnam, atmospheric convection weakens, making it difficult for rain to form. For instance, in Hanoi, there are only 6 rainy days, with a total rainfall of 23 mm. Any rainfall that does occur is typically limited to light drizzle formed by moisture condensation, characterized by extremely low intensity. But sometimes the light drizzle can last for more than half a day. Moreover, the light rain can bring a bit of chill, so it’s best to wear a long-sleeved shirt when going out.

In the south, December marks the start of the dry season. For instance, in Ho Chi Minh City, there are only about 7 rainy days, with a total rainfall of approximately 48 mm. Here, rainfall is mostly short-term downpours caused by typical strong convective weather in tropical regions. You might be suddenly caught in a shower when walking outdoors. But don’t worry. Within one or two hours or even less, the rain stops, the clouds clear and the roads dry up quickly, as if nothing has happened.

Heavy Fog

In northern Vietnam’s mountainous regions during December, there is often thick fog due to the large temperature difference between day and night and abundant water vapor. The fog reduces visibility, posing risks to driving and hiking safety. However, it adds a hazy beauty to the terraced fields in Sapa and Ha Long Bay, making it a great opportunity for photography enthusiasts to capture the fairyland-like scenery.

Packing List for Visiting Vietnam in December

Northern Vietnam:

Considering the significant temperature difference between day and night, it is recommended to pack clothes following the “onion layering method”. For the base layer, bring short-sleeved T-shirts, long-sleeved T-shirts and shirts. For the insulation layer, a knitted cardigan or a light jacket will suffice. As for pants, regular jeans or cargo pants are fine. For shoes, prioritize sports shoes or hiking shoes. If you plan to visit Sapa, remember to bring a three-in-one waterproof and windproof windbreaker.

Southern Vietnam:

Summer clothes are generally enough. Men can prepare a few short-sleeved T-shirts and shorts, while women can bring some dresses and skirts. It can be a bit cool in the morning and evening or when it rains, so it’s recommended to bring an extra long-sleeved shirt. For shoes, in addition to regular sports shoes, it’s also convenient to bring a pair of slippers for wading.
