But it is slightly cold in the early morning and evening, and a little hot at noon with strong sunshine, so it is advisable to take a coat with you because of the large temperature difference. 

On account of strong winds and lingering snow on the mountains, the temperatures there remain cold. It might even snow or hail in high altitude areas like Ile-Alatau National Park in Almaty. 

However, after middle May, it brings summer-like weather to Kazakhstan. For instance, in Almaty, the temperatures could reach up to over 33℃ (91℉). Even in spring, visitors are advised to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen.

Upper Clothes: Pack breathable T-shirts, long dresses, shirts for warm moments, plus long-sleeved shirt or sun protective clothing to protect you from ultraviolet rays on sunny days. If you are going to have a night tour, prepare a hoodie or knitted coat to keep warm. In case it rains, preparing a hard shell jacket is quite necessary. 
 
Bottoms: Shorts or skirts are recommended in the afternoon. For the early morning and evening, or if you plan to go on hikes, slacks or long pants are good choices.

Shoes: Wearing waterproof and antiskid shoes like sneakers or hiking shoes if you plan to go hiking. 
Canvas shoes are acceptable in urban areas.

Others: In May, catkins produced by poplars and willows are fluttering in the air and abundant flowers are in blossom. Thus, it’s essential for people with allergies to wear a facial mask. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, sunshade or hats to protect yourself from intense midday sun. Take a water bottle also to replenish water timely.

1. As the weather may change suddenly in some areas, checking the weather report in advance is quite vital. It’s advisable to postpone your travel plan when heavy rain or hail is predicted.

2. Additionally, the weather is a bit hot at noon, so visiting indoor attractions is highly desirable. For example, you can visit churches like Ascension Cathedral or Central State Museum of Kazakhstan in Almaty, and Hazrat Sultan Mosque or Grand Mosque Astana in Astana. It is highly recommended to explore outdoor attractions like Charyn Canyon, Big Almaty Lake, Kolsai Lake and Torysh in the morning in sunny days. Strolling around cities and experience local life, taste local cuisine are good options in the evening.

People’s Solidarity Day on May 1, 2026

The day celebrates unique harmony of over 130 ethnic groups in Kazakhstan. On the day, visitors can take delight in vibrant multicultural performances and purchase authentic ethnic artifacts from 10:30 am to 9:00 pm in the Abai Square in Almaty.

Defender of the Motherland Day on May 7, 2026

On the day, Kazakhstan will hold a grand military parade in Astana, the capital of the country, to mark the establishment of the armed forces. 

Victory Day on May 9, 2026

The day celebrates the victory of World War II in Kazakhstan. Various activities will be held on the day in Almaty. At Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, tourists will witness a touching scene as locals lay flowers and sing the song "Katyusha" in front of the memorial statue of the heroes. Open-air concert will be held from May 9 to May 11 and you will enjoy different kinds of music there such as symphonies, vocal music, folk music and military songs. At the Abai Square, a drone show might be held on May 9th.
