Is February a Good Time to Visit Ulaanbaatar?

Honestly speaking, the answer is no for the following reasons. The weather of Ulaanbaatar in February is so harshly cold that outdoor activities are challenging even though for a short time. The daytime is extended, but most scenic spots still close early at 17:00, which requires you to arrange less attractions in one day. Besides, except snow-covered landscape, there is no other worthwhile natural scenery.

Winter Naadam Fair

Winter Naadam is usually held in early February in Ulaanbaatar. You can participate in the fun games on ice like archery, skating and tug of war. There are also traditional performances of hunting, dog sled and Mongolian dancing. When coming to the night, lots of people gather around the campfire, dancing and singing together and you are highly welcomed to join them.

White Festival Celebration

White Festival or Tsagaan Sar, known as the Mongolian New Year, falls on February 18, 2026. During this period, you can see local residents wearing Mongolian traditional costumes everywhere. Various entertainment activities are held as well, such as Mongolian wrestling, horse racing, and camel racing, which provides a good chance for visitors to experience the festive atmosphere.

What to Bring to Visit Ulaanbaatar in February?

Upper body: Thermal underwear is the best choice for inner layer. In terms of second layer, you can choose from woolen knitwear, hoodies, heavy sweater and padded shirts, which fits well the indoor temperature. When going outside for sightseeing, put on fleece-lined leather coats, down coats or 3-in-1 windbreakers to deal with the severe coldness.

Lower body: Trousers must be wind-proof and thick enough to prevent cold air. Fleece-lined jeans, thick sweatpants and down pants are good choices. Considering they work less efficiently alone, you also need long johns to prevent wind creeping in and create space for heat preservation. 

Shoes: You can wear a pair of padded sneakers with thick woolen socks; thick walking boots and snow boots are better alternatives to keep warm. Make sure that their soles are non-slip to prevent falling down when conducting activities on ice and snow.

Others: Scarves and hats are useful to resist the blowing wind and gloves are necessary as well for outdoor activities. Considering the dry climate in Ulaanbaatar in February, remember to prepare moisturizing cream and lip pomades. Besides, you are suggested to bring some warm pastes to keep warm outdoors which can also be sticked on your phone’s back to extend its service time.
