Toamasina, previously called Tamatave, Madagascar’s costal city by the Indian Ocean, has a tropical rainforest climate marked by high temperatures, high rainfall, and high humidity.

Although there are no distinct dry and rainy seasons, it receives relatively low rainfall between May and December with no more than 12 rainy days per month. During this period, average temperatures are between around 20 to 29 degrees Celsius (68 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit), bringing pleasantly warm weather and no cold days. Therefore, these months are considered as the best time to visit Toamasina, during which September to November is the most recommended time due to lowest rainfall.

As for January to April, this period is the least-pick season due to excessive rainfall.

From August to December, average temperatures typically range between 21 and 29°C (70 and 84°F) and the weather is generally warm. As for rainfall this period, there are no more than 10 rainy days per month averagely and the city basically doesn’t experience heavy rain. More importantly, wind speeds average between 18 and 20 kph (11 and 12 mph), bringing light sea sprays and gentle breezes. All of these are good weather conditions for surfing.

The coastal position of Toamasina brings the city beautiful beach scenery. On sunny days, early morning and afternoon are two suitable periods to have fun on the beach because temperatures are not at the highest level and UV radiation is not as high as that at midday. So you don’t need to worry about sunburn and just remember to take necessary sunblock measures. What’s more, at dawn on a clear day, sunrise on the sea can be the most wonderful part of your tour.

Climate of Toamasina from January to April features high rainfall brought by moist southeast trade wind, and there are about 14 to 17 rainy days on average per month. In this period, the city may experience consecutive rainy days, which make road conditions bad and sightseeing inconvenient. What’s worse, tropical cyclones may strike Toamasina these months, leading to violent rainstorms and other extreme weather. So it’s not a good idea to visit Toamasina in these months.

3. If you choose to spend vacation in Toamasina between May and December, 2025, it’s recommended to check local weather broadcast first and pick as many rainless days as possible to make your tour. Since it rarely rains heavily in these months, even on rainy days, you can visit the landmark Fort Manda and also local museums and markets.
