Lemuria Land

Lemuria Land is a park located in the southern part of Nosy Be. Surrounded by an ylang-ylang grove with a history of more than 100 years, the park is home to abundant species of animals among which lemurs are the most famous. In the park, you can feed lemurs with bananas you take, view other endemic animals and plants including baby crocodiles and chameleons in various colors, and watch the production processes of ylang-ylang essential oil and rum at a close distance.

More than 10 species of lemurs live and are well protected in Lemuria Land. Eulemur Macaco is also known as the black lemur, and male and female ones vary in fur colors from black and brown. Ring-tailed lemurs are famous for their tails with 11 to 12 black and white staggered rings. Eulemur Propithecus has a strong jumping ability and it can jump from one tree to another. What’s more, nocturnal lemurs including Chirogaleus Medius also live in Lemuria Land. It’s one of the smallest lemurs in Madagascar. With a total body length of less than 30 centimeters (12 inches), it has a thick tail and hunts in the evening.

Other Diverse Flora and Fauna to View in Lemuria Land

Lemuria Land is not only home to endemic lemurs, but also a habitat for many reptiles and other animals. Here, you can take pictures with crocodile babies, observe chameleons in different colors, see geckos fighting for their territory, and walk along a stream to find wild ducks sporting. Besides, various animal specimens show you natural diversity here. Kids can climb on a giant specimen of a 200-year-old tortoise and many gorgeous butterfly specimens in a traditional house await you to appreciate.

Plants take Lemuria Land as their home too. Palms, bamboo, and camphor trees constitute varied green scenery. Cash crops including coffee trees, lychees, mangoes, vanilla beans, and peppers further come as surprises for this spectacular park.

Pleasant Journey with Flower Aroma and a Bouquet

Another two must-go places in Lemuria Land are respectively an ylang-ylang essential oil factory and a rum distillery in the southwest part of the park. From carloads of ylang-ylang to extracted fragrant essential oil, a whole production process can be watched and the air is full of flower aroma. You can also buy some essential oil products to bring you fresh and pleased feelings. In the rum distillery, rum is provided for tasting, adding a faint bouquet to your tour.

Best Time to Visit Lemuria Land

During the day, the period from 8:30 to 10:30 would be the most suitable time for you to view lemurs, because lemurs find their food in this period after they wake up, so very active. Tourists who come to Lemuria Land early will have more chances to feed lemurs. Otherwise, the lemurs will not be that interested in the food you take.

Throughout the year, the drought season from May to October is the best time to visit Lemuria Land, because in the rainy season, it’ll be not that convenient for you to walk on the dirt paths in the park smoothly and safely, and lemurs may be less active than they are in good weather.

How to Get to Lemuria Land

1. You can rent a motorcycle to travel around the island of Nosy Be, and the rental fee ranges from 40,000 to 60,000 MGA a day. 
2. Besides, it takes 1,000-2,000 MGA for a kilometer (0.5 miles) by tuk-tuk car, a common yellow traffic tool in the local area, and it’s convenient to get on one. 
3. By taxi, it only takes about 20 minutes from the Fascene Airport in Nosy Be to Lemuria Land.

 Ticket Fare: 45,000 MGA, and a tip for the tour guide is excluded.
