Kuromon Market, also known as the "Kitchen of Osaka", is about 580 meters (634 yards) long, hosting more than 150 stores, including seafood shops, snack bars, dessert shops, and grocery stores. Its glass ceilings will keep out the wind and rain and visitors can walk around worry-free.

Came into being in the year of 1823, the market was once called Enmyoji Market since it is close to Enmyoji Temple. It is now called Kuromon Market, literally meaning Black Gate Market, because the gate of the temple is black. 

The seafood is the must-eat food in Kuromon Market, like puffer, scallops, crabs, and lobsters, and you have the opportunity to see the whole process of handling the ingredients. The raw sliced wagyu beef also attracts countless visitors. Besides, you also can find some stores that sell snacks, like chestnuts, Kanto boil, and strawberry Daifuku.

1. Maguroya Kurogin Kuromon

It is a popular store that mainly sells tuna, and you can see the process of cutting fresh tuna. Large slices of fresh tuna are placed in the freezer, and you can find all kinds of foods related to tuna. The store is open from 8:3 to 17:00, and it has three floors that can be used for dining.

2. Kuromon Sanpei

It is a notable seafood store that sells all kinds of fresh seafood like lobster, and crab. Besides, you can enjoy sushi, seafood rice bowls, broiled fish, and sashimi on the site. The store provides about 80 seats and it is open from 10:00 to 17:00

3. Uofuku

The store is known for its scallops in butter, and these scallops are roasted over a charcoal fire. You can see the whole process of cleaning and pry opening the scallops, and cutting its meat. The aroma of butter and scallops attracts many visitors. Scallops are in different sizes, and the price of a small scallop is about 500 yen. The store opens from 9:00 to 16:00, and it also sells sea urchins and oysters. 


4. Minami

The fresh puffer is the special food of the store. Puffer is a delicious but dangerous food. If the puffer fish is not handled cleanly, the person who eats it can be poisoned. The chef in this shop can handle the puffer fish skillfully. The price of puffer fish sashimi is a little expensive, about 2,000 yen per one. It is open from 8:00 to 17:00.

6. Strawberry Daifuku & Dried Fruit Shop

The dried sweet potato is the special food in the store. Besides, you can taste sweet strawberry Daifuku with red bean paste or mashed bean paste, a stick of sugar-coated strawberries, and other dried fruits and vegetables. It is open from 9:00 to 17:00.


7. Kuromon Manno Main Store 

Established in 1930, a premium slice of Wagyu beef in front of the counter is a feature of this shop. You can ask the clerk to fry a slice of Wagyu beef on the spot. It is open from 9:00 to 18:00. By the way, the price on the menu refers to the price per 100 grams of wagyu beef.


8. Mitoya

Sweet homemade strawberry Daifuku is the popular dessert at the store. Besides, the store sells varied Japanese desserts, like cherry blossom mitoya, and matcha mitoya. The menu will vary based on the season, and it is open from 8:30 to 18:30. 


9. Ishibashi Shokuhin

The store mainly sells Kanto boil, which is a kind of Japanese-style boiled food that contains vegetables, seafood, and soy products. The soup of the Kanto boil is delicious, and you can have a try. Each strand of food costs about 100 yen, and it is open from 9:00 to 18:00.

10. Story of Hokkaido

It is a tax-free shop that sells Japanese objects from Hokkaido. You can buy varied Japanese snacks and desserts, like New York Perfect Cheese and Marusei Butter Sandwich. It is a good choice to buy some gifts for your family and friends here. Since desserts have a short shelf life, pay attention to the expire date when purchasing them, and some near-expired products are sold at a discount. It is open from 9:00 to 18:00.

1. Some stores only receive cash. There are currency exchange machines in the market, or prepare some Japanese cash in advance. 
2. The market offers a map in English, and you can ask one from the staff in the information center.
3. The information center provides luggage storage service, and the price for storing a suitcase is about 500 yen. It is open from 9:00 to 18:00.
4. The majority of stores will close after noon, and you can come here for breakfast.

3. Take the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line, and get off at Nihombashi Station. Then you need to walk for about 3 minutes.
4. Take Kintetsu Nara Line, and get off at Kintetsu Nippombashi Station. Then you need to walk about 5 minutes.
