Best Day Trips from Kyoto

Tired of similar shrines or temples in Kyoto, here are some day trips from Kyoto in Nara, Uji, Arashiyama, and so on for you to choose from. These trips will give you different experiences, and you may taste different food, like feeding deer in Nara, participating in a tea ceremony, and tasting sweet Matcha desserts in Uji.

1. Nara: Feed Deer, See Nara Panorama, & Taste Persimmon Sushi

Distance: 40 km (25 mi)

Recommended trip hours: from 8:00 a.m. to 16:00 p.m.


Recommended attractions & visiting order: 
Nara Park (1 hour) → Nara National Museum (2 hours) → Hiraso Restaurant (1 hour for lunch here) → Higashimuki Shopping Street (1 hour) → Kofuku-ji Temple (30 minutes) → Kasuga Taisha Shrine (30 minutes) → Mountain Wakakusa (1.5 hours)

These attractions are close to each other, and you can walk from one to the next one within 10 minutes.

2. Uji: Learn Tea Ceremony & Taste Matcha Desserts

Recommended attractions & visiting order: 
Byodo-in Temple (1 hour) → Takumi-no Yakata (1 hour) → Uji Shrine (1 hour) → Ujigami Jinja (half an hour)→ Tale of Genji Museum (1 hour) → Uji River and Uji Bridge (half an hour)

Attraction highlights

1. Byodo-in Temple

It is one of the most symbolic Buddhist temples in Uji and is famous for 2 bronze phoenixes on its roof.

2. Takimi-no Yakata

To learn about traditional tea ceremony and drink Matcha tea, Takimi-no Yakata is the best place.

3. Uji Shrine & Ujigami Jinja

Uji Shrine and Ujigami Jinja are two shrines close to each other. Uji Shrine is featured by its huge red torii gate and cute bronze rabbit sculptures. Ujigami Jinja is the most ancient shrine in Japan whose halls can date back to Kamkura Period (1185 - 1333).

4. Tale of Genji Museum

The theme of the museum is Genji– one great Japanese literary work and its displays aristocracy’s clothes, furniture, agricultural tools, and houses.

5. Uji Bridge

The 153-meter-long Uji Bridge is one of the most ancient wooden bridges in Japan. On the one side of the bridge stands a sculpture of Murasaki Shikibu – the author of Genji.

3. Arashiyama – Stroll in Bamboo World & Shrines in Hills
