1. Hakata Dontaku Festival

Hakata Dontaku Festival is held on May 3 and 4 each year, during the most visited Golden Week holiday of Japan. With more than 2 million participants, it is one of the largest festivals in Japan. Its liveliest event is the parade, where tens of thousands of revelers dressed in brightly colored traditional costumes dance through the streets of Fukuoka. In addition, about 30 stages will be set up in Fukuoka City, on which a variety of performances are given to the public, together with stalls serving food, drinks, and games all around. Towards the end of the two-day festivity, the last carnival of enthusiastic Dontaku dance will be staged, as everyone is welcome to join in.


2. Uminonakamichi Seaside Park

May is the perfect time for outdoor activities, so you are recommended to cycle around Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, an expansive natural park. The park has a special lane for biking, which takes about an hour to ride. Half of the lane goes along the shore, so you can enjoy the gentle sea breeze and beautiful sea view while cycling. In the park, there are various types of flowers blossoming in different seasons. Going in May, you may see beautiful roses.


3. Itoshima Peninsula

In May, the weather is mostly sunny and warm, perfect for enjoying the sea view and beach on the Itoshima Peninsula. There are various attractions to visit: the peninsula’s most famous scenic spots Sakurai Futamigaura’s Couple Stones and the white torii gate on the sea, the magnificent naturally formed sea cave; and Shiraito Falls.
