Day 2: Taipei - Taichung: Longteng Bridge, Shengxing Railway Station, Pounded Tea Class
After breakfast, we will drive along the west coast for about 2 hours to inland Taichung. Along the way, make a short stop at the remains of the photogenic Longteng Bridge, originally built in 1905 as a railway bridge but unfortunately destroyed by an earthquake in 1935. Black mosquitoes here may be a little annoying, so it’s a good idea to wear breathable long-sleeved shirts and pants, as regular repellent doesn’t work well. Next, our guide will lead you to the Shengxing Railway Station, a wooden marvel from the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945), built entirely without nails. As the highest railway station in Taiwan, it offers a unique photo opportunity next to a monument that proudly declares its altitude of 402 meters (1,318 ft.). Occasional street performances nearby also add a lively charm to this historic location. ★ Hakka Pounded Tea DIY ExperienceThen you will take part in a class about Hakka pounded tea in Miaoli and make your version! Pounded tea, aka Leicha, is often served to honored guests during significant occasions like weddings and festivals. The staff will introduce you to its origins and raw ingredients like tea leaves, sesame seeds, green beans, and sticky rice. Once you have learned the grinding techniques, it’s your hands-on DIY time! Strength is key, and a helpful tip is to shake your mixture while pounding. When it has a sand-like texture, you will know you have succeeded! After that, add some hot water and savor the unique flavor of the pounded tea crafted by yourself. Finally, we will drive onward to Taichung, and check into a local hotel. ► Dinner Suggestion (at your own expense): Shan Shin Restaurant, a Michelin-recommended gem that mainly serves traditional home-cooked and seafood dishes, will be your ideal dinner choice. It is a 10-minute taxi ride from your hotel and is open from 17:30 to 21:30. In a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, you can savor signature dishes like Braised Tofu with Pumpkin and Crab Sauce, which promises an explosion of fresh and fragrant flavors! Other must-tries include the Deep-fried Pork Trotters with Salt and Pepper and the Steamed Taro Cake. Due to its popularity, it is suggested that you reserve a table in advance on its official website. Day 3: Taichung - Lukang Old Street - Sun Moon Lake
In the morning, we will depart for Lukang, an ancient cultural small town 1 hour away, which has earned the nickname “Taiwan’s city of temples”. Upon arrival, you will be accompanied to explore some of the highlights. After that, we will stroll down Lukang Old Street, whose winding alleys beckon you with unique artistic works and tasty cuisines. Spend some time admiring Heqi Villa’s Minnan-style architecture or visiting Osmanthus Alley Art Village to see local artisans skillfully create delicate dough figurines or interesting lion head crafts. For lunch, you can try local specialties such as Mee Sua Soup (Chinese Vermicelli), Ox-tongue Pastry, and Taro Balls at your own expense, all at prices of around NTD 100 (USD 3). Next, we will drive to the mountains to see the fabulous Sun Moon Lake, one of the Eight Views of Taiwan. Lalu Island separates the lake, making the crescent moon-shaped south part the Moon Lake, while the round north part the Sun Lake. According to the legend, the sun and moon’s ethereal radiance enticed two evil dragons who previously inhabited the water to swallow them up. To save humanity from eternal darkness, a courageous couple discovered a pair of golden axes and scissors in a cave in Alishan Mountain and battled the dragons for three days and nights, ultimately bringing light back to the world. Apart from the mysterious legends, you will also be amazed by its awesome natural views. We will take a boat from Ita Thao Pier, enjoying the beautiful scenery around Sun Moon Lake, where verdant forests encompass the mountains and water birds flutter over the water surface. After disembarking, witness the panoramic views of both Sun Lake and Moon Lake from Ci’en Pagoda, meet local fishermen along the waterfront trail, and appreciate intricate carvings at Wenwu Temple. Finally, we will escort you back to the hotel. Meals: Breakfast

Day 4: Sun Moon Lake - Wuchang Temple - Fenqihu Old Market Street - Alishan Mountain
Today, we will depart from Sun Moon Lake to visit the relics of the Wuchang Temple in Jiji Mountain Township. At the temple entrance, nine tiles adorned with mysterious totems in the square will arouse your curiosity. They guard a treasure trove beneath, containing ancient coins and jade bracelets, and hold the blessings and protection of the divine. Follow our knowledgeable guide to traverse through them in a specific order, which is believed to bestow good fortune for you! Then proceed to Fenqihu Old Street, the highest old street in Taiwan, located at an altitude of 1,405 meters (4,610 ft.). Be sure to wear comfy shoes since you’ll explore the street with stairs. Fenqihu is a key stop of the Alishan Forest Railway, so you may get up close to vintage steam trains. Savoring a traditional railway bento, which includes delicacies like spare ribs, alpine bamboo shoots, and asparagus, is another popular activity. If you are interested, sample it for lunch at your own expense for around NTD 180 (USD 5.5). Afterward, we will ascend through a sea of clouds to the Alishan National Scenic Area, a mountain resort that promises to be the highlight of this best Taiwan tour. Our guide will lead you through winding trails in the forests to encounter extraordinary wonders like the No.12 Sacred Tree. With three generations of trees growing from a single root, the 3,000-year-old red cypress tree, also known as the Alishan Sacred Tree, is the real gem. Imagine the stories it could tell! Unfortunately, lightning struck the first generation, causing it to fall to the ground. The second generation is still standing with only empty shells and roots left, while the lush and leafy third generation exhibits its persistent vitality at the highest point. If you visit between early February and mid-April, besides verdant forests, you will also be surrounded by a pink sea of cherry blossoms. Late March is the best time to experience this floral wonder when you can admire Yoshino, Showa, and Mutan cherry trees simultaneously. ► Friendly Tips on Hotel Conditions in Alishan The government enforces strict regulations for local hotel renovations to protect the forests and environment. Thus, most hotels maintain their original layout and amenities. We have selected the top one for you, though it may not be as good as hotels in the urban area. Located in the heart of Alishan, it is also Taiwan's highest hotel, promising excellent views of mountains and easy access to popular attractions. Moreover, heating in Alishan is only activated when the temperatures fall below 8°C (46°F). Meals: Breakfast

From August to October, you may also take in the stunning sight of golden needle flowers painting the mountains in a vivid yellow hue. Upon arrival at Hualien, our guide will lead you to Tropic of Cancer Landmark Park. The striking white sundial-shaped sign and whimsical teapot-shaped art installation are perfect spots for memorable photos. Our last stop is Hualien Sugar Factory, a remnant of the Japanese colonial era. You can taste some authentic Hualian cuisines for dinner at your expense, with NTD 50 to 100 (USD 1.5-3) per serving.
